This post is a small comparison of  two free desktop virtualization software products Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 and Oracle VirtualBox 3.2. As I’m running a desktop virtualization blog and having enough of experience with these both products, I’m sharing this from my experience and thoughts. Oracle released VirtualBox 3.2.8 few days ago. This is just a maintenance release after 3.2.6. Some of the USB related issues and some more issues fixed in this release. Download VirtualBox 3.2.8 and update now (Windows host) .

• VMM: properly terminate the VM with an error if the guest is trying to switch to the PAE mode but PAE is disabled in the VM settings
• GUI: switch to native file dialogs

Let’s install the latest version of openSUSE 11.3 on VirtualBox. The good thing is, Guest additions working without installation.  So all full features of VirtualBox guest additions available just right after OS installation.

Several methods showed in this blog to install Mac OS X on Windows OS with Desktop Virtualization, original Mac installation DVD does not work sometimes with these methods. You must create ISO file from installation disk and use. This post shows how to create ISO from Mac Installation DVD in Windows.

I tried my favorite DVD writing software to Rip Mac DVD to ISO in Windows, but those images did not work with VMware or VirtualBox.  Finally, Imgburn did the job and it worked well.

Unfortunately Oracle VirtualBox is missing virtual machine cloning tool. If you need to copy or clone a virtual machine without re installing OS and other applications, then you are in trouble with VB.  This post explains how to copy and clone virtual machines in VirtualBox with CloneVDI GUI tool, a third party software.

VMware has great built in cloning tool, allows to make two types of cloning very quickly. Read more about it here.

iBoot is another good boot loader to install Mac OS X on Physical Intel computer or desktop virtualization software Oracle VirtualBox. Follow this method if you failed with EFI Boot loaders or any. This post explains How to iBoot loader with VirtualBox to Install Snow Leopard and upgrade to latest version 10.6.4.

This boot loader looked pretty good and I’m hoping this will work with most of the 32 bit and 64 bit Intel processors, not sure for AMD.
