May be I’m posting this late but still lots of users use Windows XP, Windows Vista where I live, except who buy new computers with MS OS. Windows 7 is the really a best OS from Microsoft.  Have you ever felt the difference between Windows Me and XP when XP was released? Same scenario here too. The people used XP for long time and tired with Vista, surprised by Windows 7 performance and features. Why Windows 7 better than Vista? here are some points. NT 4.0 Printer driver is not compatible 

When you try to connect a shared printer in earlier versions of operating system from Windows Vista, you may receive the following error message, “The printer driver is not compatible with a policy enabled on your computer that blocks NT 4.0 drivers”.

By any chance after you logged in, if your windows vista desktop icons missing except some windows default desktop icons, it means your vista profile not loaded properly.
