Earlier this year, NVIDIA announced its Pascal architecture for their server GPUs and which is being used to develop the long awaited GeForce GTX 1000 series GPUs. NVIDIA announced earlier in May 2016 its new GTX 1080 and GTX 1070 graphics cards with retail availability in late May and early June 2016 respectively. NVIDIA mentioned that they are clearing out their GTX 900 series inventory to make way for the newer generation of Pascal based graphics cards. The GTX Pascal series series GPUs will be the answer to the 4K with 60FPS problem since the current available GPUs have problems in playing video games in this resolution. This article covers how NVIDIA Pascal series will change the gaming industry and what is new in them.
What’s New in the NVIDIA Pascal Series Graphics Cards
The NVIDIA GeForce GTX Pascal series were unveiled in early May and these graphics cards have been long awaited and anticipated. The Pascal series graphics cards are based on NVIDIA’s Pascal architecture and are successors to the GTX 900 series graphics cards. Two cards were announced by NVIDIA, the GTX 1070 and the GTX 1080 and are the first to use the Pascal architecture. The NVIDIA Pascal series graphics cards will be a huge improvement over the Maxwell based graphics cards by providing more processing power on smaller chips.
Following are some of the features of these brand new graphics cards:
● The GTX 1080 has a clock speed of 1607MHz.
● Approximately, 2 times more performance per watt than Maxwell architecture based GPUs.
● Support for DirectX 12.
● The GTX 1070 will have 8GB GDDR5 memory clocked at around 7 GHz, whereas the GTX 1080 will have 8GB GDDR5X memory clocked around 10 GHz.
● The GTX 1070 and GTX 1080 have 2560 CUDA cores that provide a total of 6.5 TFLOPS and 9 TFLOPS of performance respectively.
● Will be built on 16nm FinFET manufacturing process from TSMC which allows a smaller chip to have lesser number of CUDA cores but provide a higher throughput than the Maxwell based graphics cards.
● Power requirement for these graphics card is 180W.
● The GTX 1080 will be available for $599 on 27th May, 2016 and the GTX 1070 will be available for $379 two weeks later.
Even though both of these graphics cards are much powerful that the GTX 980 and GTX Titan X, the GTX 1070 is being regarded as the entry level graphics card in the Pascal series. These graphics cards are cheaper and at least 30 percent more powerful than the GTX Titan X or a dual configuration of GTX 980 graphics cards. Compared to GTX 960’s maximum boost speed of 1216MHz, the GTX 1070 and 1080 are beasts.
How NVIDIA Pascal Graphics Cards Will Change the Gaming Industry?
Due to the rise of VR gaming and demand of 4K 60FPS gaming, the need for powerful graphics card was necessary. At the right time NVIDIA announced the GTX 1070 and GTX 1080 which are powerful enough to do both VR gaming and regular gaming at high resolutions and high frame rates. It is without a doubt; the Pascal graphics cards will revolutionize gaming as never before.
VR gaming requires rendering graphics at high frame rates and high resolutions for making games as real feeling as possible. The GTX Pascal series is just able to do that without a sweat. All VR headsets are compatible with the Pascal graphics cards and all games will be easily playable in maximum settings and high frame rates.
Games in 4K with 60 FPS were difficult to render with previous graphics cards series, so the GTX Pascal series will be able to do that for gamers who want high detail and life like gaming with all the new games that are coming with high quality graphics.
The GTX Pascal series will revolutionize how the graphics cards perform, because these cards are able to perform very well at regular temperatures with only air cooling. The chips in these cards also are smaller and provide much more processing power.
This was a view on how NVIDIA Pascal series will change the gaming industry and what is new in them.
