‘Shadow Copy’ in windows is a useful technology to recover accidently deleted or saved or corrupted files and folders. Without any third party software a user can recover data easily by just clicks.
Windows Vista and later operating systems come with shadow copy installed and good thing about them is, shadow copy can be used to recover files from local hard disk and network shares. But in the older operating systems than vista such as , windows XP, windows 2003 etc… shadow copy can be used for only recover network share files and folders.
This article explains how to install shadow copy client on older operating system to protect your network share folders and files. The reason you can’t run shadow copy client on standalone XP or older operating system is, when you see ‘shadow copy client’ it’s clearly say some shadow copy server should be there. This shadow copy server, in fact it’s a service called ‘shadow copy service’ cannot be installed or run on windows XP and older client operating systems.
Here are the steps to install shadow copy client in Windows XP,
Download the Shadow copy client from Microsoft site,
To install shadow copy client you need Windows Installer 2.0 or higher which usually comes with windows XP. For older operating system download from following links;
Windows Installer 2.0 Redistributable for Windows 95, 98, and Me
Windows Installer 2.0 Redistributable Windows 2000 and Windows NT 4.0
Installation is very easy and simple, once installation is done you computer will be ready to receive shadow copy client service from network server.
