Ubuntu 10.10 on VMwareInstalling and running Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat on VMware is easier than VirtualBox with current version of both products. After publishing a post recently about Ubuntu 10.10 on VirtualBox with little difficulties, I found installation on VMware is easy and straight forward. This post explains how to install Ubuntu 10.10 on VMware Player and install VMware tools successfully to get all additional features.

It’s worth to try new features on  Maverick Meerkat without disturbing your existing OS. Upgrading or installing in production environment is not recommended till final version available by October 2010. When ever you take a snapshot in VMware it keeps a separate VMDK file. Virtual machine will start running from that file and any changes after it will be keep on adding to snapshot file. How to Export VMware Virtual Machine to OVF, Import on VirtualBox

Latest VMware Workstation 7.1 and VMPlayer 3.1 have extra built in tool called OVFtool, to export Virtual disk and configurations. It’s a command line tool that can be found under program files. In this post, let me explain how to export VMware virtual machine to OVF format, then import on VirtualBox.

Don’t you think why we have to use this tool when VirtualBox supports VMDK files directly?, Yes, you are correct. Check my earlier post about importing VMDK files in to VB. But, this tool does the export in professional manner, so you can publish on internet or share with others. Open Virtualization Format (OVF) is an industry standard that describes metadata about virtual machine images in XML format.  Read more...

Convert VMware to Virtual PC 2007 – VMDK to VHD with StarWind

Convert VMware to Virtual PCIf you are testing or migrating from VMware to Virtual PC 2007 or Hyper-v, then this post will be helpful to convert VMDK files to VHD with StarWind V2V image converter. Since VMDK files cannot be opened in MS virtualization products, it must be converted to  (Virtual Hard Disk) format which MS uses. This example shows how to convert VMware to Virtual PC of existing virtual machines. It works well with StarWind V2V image converter.
