What’s New?, New Features of VMware Workstation 10 Explained

VMware, the leader of virtualization technology has released the major version of their desktop virtualization software VMware workstation 10. VMware Player 6 also included in this release. The latest release has come with new features which will impress their customers. New guest OS support, tweaked virtual machine settings/options, and virtual tablet sensors are major features in this release.

As Sysprobs covers most of the desktop and server virtualization products, this article explains the major features of what’s new in VMware workstation 10. Official support of upcoming Windows 8.1 support is great since it automatically works with ‘Easy Install’ method and VMware tools.

Major New Features of VMware workstation 10

1) New guest Operating System support.

Easy install detects Windows 8.1 and do the installation easily in unattended mode. Also some of the latest Linux distributions supported. Below screenshot shows the detected Windows 8.1 (aka Windows blue) by latest Workstation 10’s easy install.

Now the working physical Windows 8.1 computer can be converted as virtual machine with this latest release.

2) Extended hardware support for VMs

Now we can create virtual machines with 16 vCPUs, 64GB of memory, 8 TB disks. Obviously to utilize this feature your physical computer must have enough resources.

If you like to use this new improved hardware settings for VMs, the particular virtual machine should be upgraded to Workstation 10 version. You will get this upgrade option in VM’s home page after upgrading to VMware workstation 10.

Also, they claim that new version is having faster USB (v3)connection to virtual machine which can improve the data transfer from your USB devices.

Additional HDD controller can be found here, which is SATA controller. New virtual hard disks can be added through SATA controller to virtual machine for better data transfer rate.

3) Expiring Virtual machines

This new feature allows you to set up an expiry date for particular virtual machine which can not be started or accessed after expiry date. Only the administrator can give access back or modify any settings related to expiry date. This can be useful for testing or short term usage of virtual machine. The VM should be encrypted before setting up expiry date.

4) Tablet Sensors

Now your virtual machines can sense the sensors (so understand the user’s action) of tablet computer. Therefore, the running applications inside virtual machine can work with sensors of physical tablet computer (if VMware workstation is installed in tablet computer)

Even though few of the new features are not very useful for home users, I don’t find valid reasons for the upgrade. But if you are thinking to buy a new VMware workstation software to virtualize multiple Operating Systems in a single host, then version 10 is the ideal one.
