  1. I have not tried the Brother MFC-J470DW, but have the previous generation J4610DW. It is by far the worst printer I have ever owned.

The OSX drivers do not work. In OSX, network printing over ethernet or wifi will not detect the printer unless it’s woken up manually, by pressing a button, in which case you have about a 25% chance of a print appearing. (I have tried with several computers and versions of OSX, versions of printer firmware and drivers). Wifi reception is horrible, the printer needs to be in the same room as the router.

Misfeeds and paper jams are very common. The manual feed tray is only detected some of the time. Often manually fed paper is fed straight through the printer without being printed on, after which it starts printing on paper from the normal tray, nicely wasting ink printing my photos on normal paper.

I will never by Brother again.

    • Thank you! Huge help. Just fyi…I will never, ever buy Canon again when it comes to a Mac iPrinter. So I get your frustration. Canon’s have many of the same negatives as you have had with Brother.

HP’s break the bank in ink re inkjet – so it’s a tough toss-up in shopping.

I’ve LOVED an older Brother all-in-one Mono (black) laser printer tho, so I think I’m going to try a color refurbished Brother laser this time around.

    • I completely agree (as a Mac user). I have bought (and thrown away because it was past the point I could return) two in the past 9 months. Wireless connectivity is faulty and inconsistent, which was o.k. because I could just print via USB. The deal-killer, however, is that both printers refused to recognize new printer cartridges when they were replaced, so I was out $70 each time for a cartridge that the machine wouldn’t accept — even though it was the right cartridge, made by Brother, for the machine. Learned my lesson — no more Brother printers!

    • i have a brother L2700dw and it is a useless p.o.s.
It is on network but invisible and not responding.
AIrprint does not work nor does the wifi.
Sometimes it works on USB, sometimes not.
      Customer support has given up.

  2. Just to add, I am currently trying to print my Christmas cards on the brother. I have to use a USB stick to get the picture into the printer, as I can’t get it to print from any of my computers.

Every time I have to use this printer (I only use it for photos), I get so angry that I publish a couple of comments debunking useless reviews on the internet.

  3. The Brother MFC-J4710DW is the biggest pile of garbage I have ever owned, due to the fact as of this date, brother has not updated their print drivers, to allow you to print in draft mode from a mac. As a result, color printing takes FOREVER, and uses ink quickly.

  4. I have a Brother J885dw and have to reset the wifi EVERY time and turn it on and off for each print. This is a reason I am reading this article. Do you guys actually test these because I got the Brother I have from a similiar article!

  5. Brother printers do not work with MAC. HP’s are a disaster with any MAC operating system

The best all in one i had was made by Canon

I tried to buy the same Canon but they changed due to a security loop.

  6. Glad I read these. I am an apple guy and have a Kodak printer that stinks – for whatever reason, I have always had to use my flash drive to copy and put in the printer to get the print out. I will stay away from Brother not just based on these posts, but from i have heard word of mouth. I am leaning to Canon.

I know from experience about HP, nothing HP I have ever owned is worth the money or time.

    • I’m on this article because my printer, HP OfficeJet 8610, which is only a year and a half old, recently decided that my wireless password was incorrect. Two hours on the phone with HP customer service, one more hour with Spectrum wireless, and a final hour with HP customer service didn’t do a thing to solve the problem. I am so unimpressed with this HP, just chiming in to say your instincts are correct: don’t buy one.

  7. Wow, very I much appreciate the comments…been through 2 hp rtn’d to Costco and a Brother. Kept being told ” Oh it’s something that you’re doing, or your Mac is glitchy. Hopefully the Canon is my answer.

  8. Add me to the list of “Worst Printer Ever” when it comes to the Brother printer!

I’ve never, even 30 years ago, when printers were notoriously fickle, had such a worthless printer.

It won’t wake up, then it is confused for quite a while. Then, after it eeks out about six documents, it stops responding. I have to turn it off and back on, and, if that doesn’t work, I have to unplug the modem (annoying everyone else in the house who is watching Netflicks) and then plug everything back in.

I am reading this article because I need to know how not to waste another $200-$300 (ink isn’t cheap, and I bought some extra cartridges). I am amazed that Brother is a recommendation. That makes distrust this site completely.

It is going to recycling this weekend. What a waste of resources!

  9. I am in the hunt because my Epson WF 2540 is an ink hog and won’t let me use after market cartridges. I print a few pages and it’s out of ink. At $13/a cartridge I’m better off going to Kinkos. Anyone that can make a reliable printer for home use should clean up because the market is wide open.

    • I had an image class Canon and it was nothing but problems. Had an extended warranty and I am glad I did. Just replaced with an Epson And the connectivity is excellent so far.

  10. I’m very frustrated with my HP Envy printer. It constantly goes offline & then my iPhine & MAC can’t “find” it to print. The only “fix” I’ve found is to unplug both my internet modem/router and the printer, then restart both. Ugh!!!

  11. I had a ML-2165W Samsung, worked great until macOS upgrade. Now I can’t use it. What is your suggestion for MacOS High Sierra version 10.13.2 laser black and white?

  12. Same issue as Christine only it’s my HP LaserJet P1102w that won’t run with MacOS High Sierra 10.13.3. HP support has not resolved. Suggestions for a laser printer for MacOS would be helpful…thanks.
