Update Snow Leopard by Hazard to 10.6.7 on VMware or VirtualBox

Snow Leopard 10.6.2 Intel AMD by Hazard is a famous hackintosh distribution available on internet. It was almost tweaked for Intel and AMD physical computers with most of the famous chipsets. The good thing is, it works well on Oracle VirtualBox without any third party boot loaders or editing configuration files. But the main issue is, this can’t be updated to latest Mac OS X versions because of its running in hacked kernel which can’t be upgraded. This guide is showing how to update Snow Leopard 10.6.2 Intel AMD by Hazard  to 10.6.7 latest update on VMware or VirtualBox.

10.6.7 hazard on virtualboxI’m not only showing the way of update, but also the few and important points you must consider to install Snow Leopard 10.6.7 Intel AMD by Hazard on VirtualBox and VMware.

Hazard 10.6.7 on VirtualBox 4

1) The latest Oracle VirtualBox 4 came with new motherboard and sound virtual chipsets. Therefore it makes the possibility of working sound inside Snow Leopard virtual machine.

Make sure the following chipsets are set for virtual machine before start the hazard installation.

2) Install the latest VirtualBox VM Extension pack corresponding to your version. As of today 4.0.4 is the latest release and read more here where to download VirtualBox extension pack 4.0.4 and install.

This step must be done to avoid virtual machine crashing problem while accessing USB storage devices inside Snow Leopard VM.

3) Check this guide to install Snow Leopard 10.6.2 Intel AMD by Hazard on VirtualBox.

4) Skip the next part and go to last part to update.

Hazard 10.6.7 on VMware

1) By any chance you are running Snow Leopard 10.6.2 Intel AMD by Hazard  on VMware workstation or VMPlayer, make sure to replace some kext files before restart the virtual machine after the software update.

If you restart the Snow leopard virtual machine without replacing these kext files with older version, then your USB keyword, mouse and storage will stop working.

Check this guide to replace kext files and  fix USB issues after latest Mac OS X update in VMware.

2) Follow the next part.

Update Snow Leopard by Hazard to 10.6.7

It’s the same procedure in VirtualBox and VMware.

The important thing is, we must install the additional legacy kernel 10.6.7 package (which will overwrite the kernel) before press Restart button after the update.

1) Download and transfer the legacy kernel 10.6.7 to your Mac OS X virtual machine.

2) Now, either you run the software update or download the latest 10.6.7 combo update manually.

Start the update, if you have snapshot feature in your desktop virtualization software, then better take a snapshot of current state now.

Once installation (update) completed, DO NOT press restart button. It will allow you to work on other things without restarting or closing the dialog box.

3) Run the legacy kernel 10.7.0 package now.

4) Select legacy kernel option as shown below. I’m not sure how this update will work on AMD processor computer.

Please someone update the result in comments area.

select legacy 10.6.7 kernel

5) Once the kernel package installation completed, restart the Snow leopard virtual machine now.

You may get some VirtualBox errors while restarting. Do not worry, just power off the virtual machine and power it on again.

I’m sure it will boot properly with all latest updated Mac OS X 10.6.7.

Here is the updated Snow Leopard 10.6.7 Intel AMD by Hazard on Oracle VirtualBox with 95% working sound.

I’m sure these steps can be done easily by you, since this Hazard is already tweaked for non apple hardware.

Just let me know how it worked for you.

Have fun

  1. Hi there,

I used the hazard 10.6.2, updated to 10.6.7, and successfully installed on my AMD Athlon II (Windsor) in VMW7, with Vista as the host OS. I have a few questions:

How can I increase performance in the VM? Not sure if VMWare tools installed all the way – how would I know? I also installed the vmsvga2 package from zenith432, but again, I’m not sure if it’s working.

It boots fine, runs, but video is SUPER slow, disk access too.

Any tips would be appreciated! I’m using nawcom modcd to boot all the time – and would like to run in 64 bit mode if that will speed things up. Using 10.6.0 legacy kernel, I know 10.7 is out – will that help?

I don’t need crazy fast speed, just enough to run Xcode and edit a nib file in interface builder. Thanks!

SPECS: 3.0 gb memory, AMD Athlon II (Windsor), 3.0ghz, Gigabyte MA785 mobo, ATI Radeon 4200HD gfxcard with 512mb.

** I have not tried booting options from command line yet (-f, etc) and I told VMware that I had 1 processor with 2 cores. Hope someone can help me out!

    • Im having a problem. I create the partition. and ISO image Mac server. pick camaleon…… it will load and finish. Restart and will make me do all over again. over and over again. but never enters the desktop why is this happening.? partiction starts over & over again.

  2. I’ve got an error loading ‘legacy_kernel’ 0xe during restart VM. Any help appreciated.
I have W7SP1 64Bit with Intel Dual Core 2 and Intel chipset.
    Help!

    • It has happened with me too.
Just uncheck “Enable EFI” option in the VM Settings -> System and it will be loaded correctly using camaleon.

  9. v3000 amd nvidia 650m success update from 10.6.2 to 10.6.7 but restart -v with black screen. can help? i did that for 4~5 times, same result. tq

  10. All seemed to work fine but when i tried a simple word processor like iwork ‘9 and other softwares like games, i have been disappointed. There are some problems with graphic card. Iwork doesn’t work and show just white background, no text or diagram.
    OpenGL is also not supported.
I would like to know if the graphic card is emulated and if these problems are for all users. Maybe I could change my graphic card or the drivers ?
My config: Windows 7 pro, virtualbox 4.08, Mac os X 10.6.7. and a ATI radeon graphic card.
    Thanks for your feedback.

  11. hi i hope someone can help i have followed all instructions and when i do restart the virtual machine, when it is booting up the apple logo appears then it crashes the whole vm program has anyone got any ideas on this?

  12. Successfully updated hazard 10.6.2 to 10.6.7
    processor Intel Core i7 CPU 870 @ 2.93GHz

I made sure to install virtualbox extensions and the legacy kernel like you said.
no problems. thank you very much!

  13. works well with hazards mac os x iso. virtualbox 4.1 on win xp…machine is a conroe 865 with core2duo an 3.5gb ram …nvidia 6200 graphics card. but a bit slow reaction (harddisc??) and graphics (2d acceleration is not possible to turn on in virtual box). i’ll try to install it on a second harddisc for testing purposes… will try that also with an original apple 10.6.3 dvd . we’ll see….

  14. Hey nice tutorial bro… I have a little problem that i did’nt have the hazard’s distributed mac but i have hackintosh .. am using vmware workstation .. does this method is ok with other hackintosh other than hazard one ?? plz reply quick . Thanks

  15. Can this be installed over your current system? here are my specs. Acer Aspire 5517 notebook. 64 bit windows 7. 3.00 gigs. of ram AMD Athlon dual core prosseccer

  16. I’m really glad that I’ve found this website. WORKS flawlessly after a “few” tries (like 30 reinstalls, all my fault)
I didn’t know about the kernel stuff which is described here. Now I’ve got a succesful update to 10.6.8 legacy kernel

I MUST be lucky cuz my config is an AMD (below).

    VirtualBox+EXP (running on Win7 64bit)
    AMD Phenom II X6 1100T 3.3GHz (9MB chache)
    8gigs DDR3 2000MHz RAM
    Radeon HD 6850 1gig DDR5
    Asus M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3 (amd 880G chipset)

    ALL YOU NEED:
leohazard.com (I used the normal version without update, not the server one, torrent it: “hazard snow leopard 10.6.2 sse” search and download “legacy kernel 10.6.8 darwin 10.8.0” – you need to put it on your virtual machine

download mac software update, befora start installing the combined update (DO NOT press the restart to install button) install the legacy kernel package I mentioned before (its name should be “legacy_kernel-10.8.0.v2.pkg”) i’ve put it on the vm desktop for easy access…

then press restart to install the combined mac update

This has worked for me, hope I could help a few great AMD users… 😉

  17. Is it me or is the kernal link down? very interested and excited i found this thread but no download 🙁

  18. I just attempted Fonyo’s suggestion in my virtualbox setup as I need the app store for xCode.

I can confirm this worked! Up and running in 10.6.8! had some issues with waiting for root device messsages, but after some tweaking and reboots it started to work!

    Thx!
