Suddenly one day you will find that you are unable to open or explore USB drive/disk which connected the computer. USB drive not opening on double click or Right Click then Explore will say an error message and will not open the disk for your access. Do not worry, your files and folders are fine inside the USB disk. The reason for this problem is the virus attack on your computer or where previously USB drive connected.

To keep things calm and make sure your data is there on the USB disk, go to Run and type the drive letter of USB, for example, E: , it will open and allow you to access the data. Still the double click or explore the drive will not work on the Windows XP, Vista, 7 or 8 computer.

Reason For USB Drive Not Opening on Double Click

When a particular virus infects a computer it creates autorun.inf in the root of every disk, including USB and hard disks. This file will be marked as system and hidden file and the virus even will disable the folder option to show hidden files in explorer. The fake autorun.inf file which was created by the virus is the main culprit for USB opening problem.

If you can access drive somehow by exploring or typing the drive letter in the address bar, then look for a hidden file called ‘autorun.inf’ and delete it. Now try to open USB disk.

If you can’t see the autorun.inf file, follow the manual steps below. This method will work on Windows 8, 8,1, Windows 7, XP and Vista.

1. Open the command prompt with administrative privilege. You can right click on command prompt then select ‘Run as Administrator’.

2. Let’s assume that USB drive letter is E, so type E:

enter usb drive

3. Once you enter into USB drive, type attrib -r -h -s autorun.inf

This is to remove the file properties which do not allow us to delete the file.

4. Type del autorun.inf

To delete the file from the command prompt.

Basically, once you delete autorun.inf file created by the virus will solve the problem and will allow you to open USB drive with double click or right click and explore.
