By any chance if you need to restore only address book contacts to your blackberry device from previous backup files or different device through Blackberry Desktop Manager, then this quick tip will be helpful. I had to do this step to one new blackberry device which was missing some of the contacts from previous device. The strange thing was, it did not synchronize the whole contacts from old device via wireless (BES). So, I had to restore only address book from backup file to new device with Blackberry desktop manager.
By default when you have a Blackberry device configured for wireless synchronization (BES or BIS), it synchronizes whole contacts/address book entries to your email service provider which can be corporate Exchange mail or other personal email providers.
You can’t restore only contacts through desktop manager to a device which is set to sync through wireless (BES or BIS). So, Address book option will be disabled in default restore or advanced restore mode where you can’t select separately and continue the individual restore.
Now you could guess how to enable address book option and restore in Blackberry desktop manager.
1) Remove the Blackberry device from connected computer.
2) Go to Contacts/Address Book, press menu button and select options. Select the wireless sync service book (mostly its called ‘Desktop’). Remove the tick to disable wireless sync for contacts and save the changes.
3) Connect back the device to computer. Now address book option will be enabled in Blackberry Desktop Manager where you can select and restore your address book entries/contacts only.
4) After the restore, disconnect the device from computer and enable back the wireless sync option which you did in step 2.
That’s it. Now your device will have the restored contacts, it will start sync with your email service provider and updates your contacts.
