Recent items (or documents) is a shortcut folder from Windows OS which allows to access your recent items including, files, folders and some other items that Windows OS can gather. Unfortunately Microsoft has removed this shortcut from earlier usual places on latest Windows 8.1 and 8. This simple guide shows you how to pin to task bar or start menu and view the recent items on Windows 8.1.
I would say that this is another important icon that Microsoft has hidden like My Computer icon on Windows 8.1. If you are a user who regularly access your recent items on Windows 8.1 computer, this method would be much helpful. Basically it’s a hidden and system protected folder and we need to show and pin it to task bar or start menu in Windows 8.1. If you are a Windows 7 user, check our earlier guide about Windows 7 recent items.
Pin and View Recent Items on Windows 8.1
1) Since it’s a hidden and system protected folder, let us enable the option to show hidden files/folders and system protected files in Windows 8.1. We can revert back these settings after pinned the recent documents.
Open Windows explorer, Go to View and select Options.
Need to enable hidden files and system protected files as shown below.
You need to tick ‘Show hidden files….’ and untick ‘Hide protected operating system files’ to view Recent documents on Windows 8.1.
2) Now if you go to user profile folder and you must see the Recent folder shortcut which will take you the recent items.
You can Right click on it and select ‘Pin to Start’ to show it in start screen. If you like recent items on task bar, simply drag and drop it on task bar, it will be pinned with Windows explorer.
